It is our conviction that guaranteeing the right of all children around the globe, no matter where they come from, to the nurture and care of a family environment, as well as unfettered access to education are most crucial to the well-being of any child.
Overview & Footprint
Morgan Hill Children Foundation (MHCF) is a licensed Nigerian non-governmental, not-for-profit organization dedicated to protecting the basic rights of vulnerable and orphaned children as well as promoting their overall welfare and interest.
Working from our various locations in Lagos State, Akwa-Ibom and Cross River State, MHCF’s interventions have, and will continue to target most critical issues common in the areas where we operate. The foundation, has its headquarters in Lagos State, Nigeria
Our strategic focus is to develop programs and campaigns that address the challenges faced by vulnerable children such as abandonment, prolonged institutionalization, social stigma, lack of access to education and economic opportunities; physical impairment and a general failure of systems and authorities to guarantee the fundamental rights of a child (United Nations Convention on The Rights of A Child. (Click here))
Our intervention approach is guided by the conviction that children who have access to the nurture and care of a family environment, as well as unfettered education are most likely to grow into balanced adulthood and achieve their God-given potential. The broad framework of our detailed services is in two-fold;
1. International Adoption Services
Available research information from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has shown that over 17.5 million children in Nigeria are orphaned or vulnerable. Research has also proven that even when these children are placed in temporary residency for their care & protection, their Institutionalization ultimately results in social and behavioral problems (including aggression, hyperactivity), and inhibits the child’s overall adjustment into the larger society. On the other hand, when a child grows under the full nurture and care of a family environment, he/she is better positioned to face the future and play an empowered role in shaping his/her tomorrow.
MHCF agrees with the international view that adoption is a viable tool to redress the consequences of institutionalization. Unfortunately, the option of adoption is not very acceptable to Nigerians. Stigma, intolerance for the physically impaired, economics, inordinate preference and hope for natural childbearing are some of the causes of this apathy. It is this sentiment that gives credence to a structured International Adoption program in Nigeria.
Though Nigeria is not yet a signatory to The Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Inter-Country Adoption (Hague Adoption Convention), many independent States in Nigeria have made provisions in their laws that support or allow for intercountry adoption.
MHCF is a licensed (supervised) Adoption Service Provider. We adopt as many of the safeguards and guidelines of the Hague Convention in the conduct of our services. Our vision is to remain the premier adoption agency in the country and we aim to find homes/families for at least 30 abandoned children across the country annually. The adoption services are sectored as follows;
Adoptions To The United States & Canada
Adoptions by Nigerian Americans: We are licensed in Lagos, Akwa-Ibom & Cross-River States to place children to the United States & Canada. While we are currently looking to expand to other States, we are still able to process, review or supervise new or existing adoption cases in any other Nigerian State
Adoptions by non-Nigerian Americans: We are the only licensed provider that is authorized to process placement of children with non-Nigerian Americans to the United States & Canada from Lagos State (only). It should be noted that adoptions by non-Nigerian Americans can only be done from Lagos State according to the latest USCIS Update (https://travel.state.gov/content/adoptionsabroad/en/country-information/alerts-and-notices/nigeria14-06-091.html)
Adoptions by Other International Countries
We are licensed in Akwa-Ibom & Cross-River States to place children to other countries other than the US & Canada. While we are currently looking to expand to other States, we are still able to process, review or supervise new or existing adoption cases in any other Nigerian State
